Billy the Kid from The Man from Nowhere Science Fiction Novel

Billy the Kid is featured in my book, "The Man from Nowhere". As most author's do, I called upon inspirations from past movies to help me imagine the character in my mind. I've read that most authors actually hear the voices of famous actors in their minds as they write the dialogue for their characters. My version of the Kid is accurate to historical records as to his size and weight, but I let my imagine conceive of what Billy would say or do in my book's fictional town, South Fork. He really was a small guy as portrayed in Young Guns  and acted by Emilio Estevez. Of course, in the west size meant nothing as long as you were good with a gun. Billy only measured 5' 7" tall weighing in about 135 lbs.

My version of the Kid is really inspired by Young Guns, in that I imagined my Kid to be just as insane as Estevez portrayed him. Kid is just that, a kid, a wild, crazy and dangerous kid who is also one of the west's greatest marksmen. He actually revels in violence. It's all a big party to him. There's a huge disconnect in Billy's mind between the deaths of his comrades and any sense of responsibility for those deaths, at least on the surface.

In the back of his mind he doesn't really consider himself a villain. He justifies himself as much as everyone else typically does in real life.

It's this justification of himself, along with his conscience, that makes my version of the Kid unpredictable, and I think, interesting. He straddles the fence between good and evil, you never know where he's going to land.

One of the reasons I added Billy to my story was his legendary status. "The Man from Nowhere" being a sci-fi western and featuring a hero of possibly super human abilities meant that he needed a challenge worthy of himself. Who better to fill that requirement than a legend like Billy the Kid. The cool thing about legends is they can be superheroes almost in how they are portrayed. You may not see them flying or bullets bouncing off their chests, but for all intents and purposes, they might just as well have been portrayed that way in some stories. But, Legends are where history's heroes and villains meet fictional heroics. The sky is the limit. So the question is, what happens when you pit a historical legend with a gun against a man who has superhuman abilities with a gun? One answer is lots of violence and destruction. Who wins or loses is something you'll have to read for yourself in "The Man from Nowhere". On sale now at Amazon!
