In this corner the ever Incredible Hulk weighing in at a measly 1040 lbs at 7' tall, and in the other corner the Batman with the height of 6' 2" and weight of only 210 lbs.
The Hulk usually turns out to be Superman's sparring partner in these DC vs Marvel showdowns, but this time way back in the early 80's, in one of the giant sized Marvel and DC collaborations, Batman did the unthinkable. He took on the Incredible Hulk. It wasn't Batman's idea of course. It was all due to that maniac the Joker. He just had to steal a gamma gizmo Bruce Banner was counting on to help him rid himself of the curse of the Hulk, and then convince the Hulk that Batman was the bad guy. The pointy ears just didn't sell the Batman's good guy status to the Jade Giant.
But how does a superb athlete and and all around brilliant detective defeat someone that can knock down a mountain? Very carefully.
In round one the Hulk grabs Batman and almost crushes Batman's back years before Bane gets his chance. Thinking quickly Batman boxes the Hulk's ears which as Batman explains only startles the monster long enough for him to get free. Batman goes for the old gas trick, but the Hulk pulls a fast one and refuses to breathe in the bat gas.
In a move that would only work for the Batman, Bats kicks the Hulk right in the solar plexus causing the Hulk to breath the gas in and pass out. Batman wins!
Even then as a child reading this story for the first time I felt that the Hulk's powers were toned down a bit to fit into a Batman storyline. The Hulk seemed a little more like the TV Hulk than his usual awesomely powered comic self, but nonetheless I really enjoyed this story and read it over and over again. It's still a lot of fun even as an adult to see this unlikely team up of these two heroes battle it out.
My favorite action scene occurs in the second round between Batman and the Hulk when the Hulk throws an entire car at Batman.
Batman being the expert escape artist and survivor that he is manages to jump through one side of the car's window out the other without getting squashed like a bug. Love that scene!
The Hulk's rampage knocks a whole building down upon the two. Somehow Batman manages to survive and crawls out of the wreckage. I think you have to give that one to the Hulk.
Of course, later on the two work together against the villains, but as for the fights between Batman and the Hulk, I guess, you have to call it a tie.
The first season episode of the Incredible Hulk, “Never Give a Trucker an Even Break” was a great episode that one of the greatest directors of all time, Steven Spielberg hated. Why did Spielberg hate it? The episode used footage from Spielberg’s TV movie the Duel which he made him angry, and you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. He couldn’t do anything about it though, since, Universal owned both the Hulk TV show and “The Duel” starring Dennis Weaver. He did learn something though. After that he always insisted a clause be in his contracts to protect his movies from being used as stock footage. Regardless, of Spielberg’s feelings toward the episode, it was one of the best of the series. The scenes in question are related to the red Plymouth shown in the episode and the old beat up big rig truck. On the movie Dennis Weaver is harassed by a truck driver the entire movie and pretty much scared out of his mind. Duel originally aired as a part of the ABC Movie of the Week...
In this video I take a look at the war between the Six Million Dollar Man, Steve Austin and the Robot Maker, Dr. Dolenz. The Robot Maker first appeared on the first season episode of the Six Million Dollar Man, “Day of the Robot and then on two more episodes, “Run, Steve, Run” and Return of the Robot Maker.” The Robot Maker could easily be confused with the Fembot creator, Dr. Franklin. Interestingly enough there doesn’t seem to be a connection between the two doctors and their bionic robots, even though, both doctors used the exact same tactic of replacing Austin’s boss, Oscar Goldman with an exact robot duplicate. In his first appearance, the Robot Maker is referred to as Dr. Dolenz. In his second appearance he introduces himself as Jeffrey Dolenz. In his third and final appearance he introduces himself as Chester Dolenz. No explanation for the name change is given. Perhaps, he didn’t want people to know his real name. Coincidentally, on a trivia note, the actor who played the R...
